TV Fashion: Pretty Little Liars

It’s been a long time since I’ve been addicted to a TV show and was obsessed with their fashion!  Ok, maybe not that long because Gossip Girl was my personal favorite for a long time.  But lately, my newest guilty pleasure and taking the place of my favorite TV show with great fashion is Pretty Little Liars.  For those of you who haven’t seen or are familiar with the hit ABC family series, it’s definitely something you should check out! I will bring you up to speed in less than a minute…Pretty Little Liars, based on the hit book series by Sara Shepard, revolves around four teenage best friends (Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer) who are being harassed through text messages, gifts, emails and the occasional lipstick message on a mirror by an anonymous person who goes by the name of “A” and this mysterious harasser knows their deepest darkest secrets.  But there is a twist…and believe me the twist is what keeps me hanging on each week and dying for the next episode.  The secrets are only known by their murdered friend Alison.  After each episode, you are left with these forever probing questions that propel each episode…Who murdered Alison?  Did Allison really die?  If she’s dead, did she pass along the secrets to someone else?  Interested yet??

But enough about the plot because believe me, I could go on about how hooked I am forever!  I have to say costume designer Mandi Line does an amazing job styling each character for the show, her job is the job I am aiming to have in the next few years.  Mandi does a really great job showcasing their personality through their style and each one has such a different and distinct style, it makes you want to imitate it at home when you have a personal connection with the style.  I recently had a friend come to me and say she wanted me to help her go shopping because she wanted to dress like Aria from Pretty Little Liars!  You know you’ve done a great job when people are imitating your characters style that you created.  So let’s look at each of the characters and dissect their style.

Aria (played by Lucy Hale)

The unique one and in my opinion the best styled character on Pretty Little Liars, Aria’s style is the most reflected of what my closet aspires to look like!  Aria’s pieces are the most edgy of all the girls, you can tell her character is styled to be the one that experiments, the one that will grab a pair of scissors if the outfit doesn’t fit right!  Aria’s style is all about the details.  You notice it in her feather earrings, printed and fish net stockings, headbands and hats, edgy shoes and bold bohemian patterned tops and dresses.  She mixes luxe and rich materials, such as leather and velvet and layers with different textures in dark hues such as black, gray, burgundy and brown.  She completes her look with urban chic details like zippers, chain bags, and wears motorcycle boots to offset the girliness of her dresses and skirts.  And her jewelry is to DIE for!!

Emily (played by Shay Mitchell)

Emily’s style reflects her character’s athletic lifestyle, everything is little more relaxed and comfortable.  Emily is sporty and definitely has the girl next door look but her character still keeps up fashionably with her friends but keeps it within her lifestyle.  Her outfits are kept simple with classic pieces (think V-neck tees and tanks) that are layered with bright-colored cardigans or loose fitted shirts and sweater.  Emily’s staple pieces are minis, jeans, graphic tees and scarves as the main accessory.  Sometimes her look is spiced up with loose trendy tops, skinny jeans and riding boots but overall the main focus is to put comfort first.  When you think of Emily, picture Cameron Diaz…sporty with some fashion sense!

Hanna (played by Ashley Benson)

Hanna is the fashionista of the bunch and her great fashion sense matches her sassy attitude, which I love.  Her character is “in the know” with trends and takes different elements from the latest trends and incorporates it into different looks completed with statement-making accessories.  Hanna doesn’t go too far out there with her style but it is always kept girly and chic with tailored blazers, ruffled blouses and curve hugging dresses.  What always stands out to me about how her character is styled is how fashionably put together she always is, even when Hanna is in sleepwear.  She is styled to be the ultimate fashionista, one you can picture walking right out of a fashion magazine!

Spencer (played by Troian Bellisario)

Spencer is a modern-day preppy more sophisticated styled character on the show and her embedded wisdom is portrayed through her sophisticated style.  I have to say I do enjoy seeing what she wears in every episode (even if it doesn’t reflect my personal style choice), there is something about the way she is styled that exudes confidence with a little bit of school teacher.  Spencer is often seen in polos, skirts, sweaters, cardigans and knee-highs that are in cream, navy and red.  Her clothing pieces are always polished, tailored with fine lines, and menswear-inspired with a touch of youthful edge and her accessories are always classic but they have a certain look to them that make her stand out!  When you think of Spencer, picture a Ralph Lauren advertisement!
